The Best Breakfast Fry in Ireland

About two weeks ago, it was a Thursday evening, I was feeling quite ready for our lovely Canadian guesties arriving at some point the next day. My brother was on his way from England with his family. The shopping and baking was done and I was relaxing into a chilled family evening…when the doorbell rang. At the door stood a well-known blogger, reviewer and writer for the media news company www.worldsbestgolfdestinations.com complete with overnight bags, golfclubs and his lovely wife.

They were on their last night of their two week review trip of the best Irish golf course and associated places to stay. Having stayed at the five star The Galgorm, Loch Erne Resort, Roe Park Resort, Glasson Lakehouse and Portmarnock [to name just a few] they were here for their stay at Margaret’s Cottage. And [never start a sentence with the word ‘and’] I was not expecting them at all !!

So, once I had checked all my diaries, online booking platforms and even rung The Burford Lodge to see if they had turned up at the wrong B&B, I explained that “…there must have been a mistake…” “No mistake, we are at the right place. Your cousin Ciaran said….” Gulp! There were two International accommodation [and golf course] reviewers at my door and I wasn’t expecting them! This is the stuff of nightmares. However I thought on my feet and quickly welcomed them into Margaret’s Cottage…later discovering that Ciaran and I had missed some communication between ourselves and the Callaghans, and the upshot of it was…Sandra and Jim Callaghan standing on my doorstep, totally unexpectedly, here to review the awesome Ardglass Golf Club and….well…, our place too.

Anyway, let’s cut to the chase…Jim and Sandra Callaghan were just lovely. At breakfast I just told them the whole story about their “unexpected” visit and we laughed [albeit my laugh was behind a nervous smile and somewhat gritted teeth]. And our international reviewers/bloggers/writers got to see us just as we are – with no red carpet rolled out for them– and I just said, “I wasn’t expecting you…so you’ve just had to take us as we are…this is the real Margaret’s Cottage” And this is what they wrote….

“….The final course on this trip was Ardglass. The course is less than 2 hours from Dublin, and under an hour from Belfast and is close to the world renowned Royal County Down golf links at Newcastle. Ardglass is a true test of golf…. Where to Stay For the last night of our trip, we chose to stay somewhere different. After staying in numerous hotels and resorts, we went for the home from home choice and stayed in Margaret’s Cottage, a boutique B&B, right across the road from the golf club. Ciara, our hostess and her daughter, Kelsey greeted us like long lost family as we were welcomed into their home.

The rooms in the cottage were lovely and comfortable. Our video above gives you a flavour of what’s on offer. Ciara’s family history stories were fascinating, her family has been connected to Ardglass for over a hundred years. The Stuff of legends. And, her family own the local pub, 50 yards away. What’s not to love about staying here.

Speaking of the legendary, Ciara’s Irish breakfast is not to be missed. Locally sourced ingredients and cooked to perfection. It was, without doubt, the best breakfast fry we had on the whole trip, and we had a few! We highly recommend staying at Margaret’s Cottage. For couple and small groups, it’s perfect. Ciara and Kelsey will look after you as if you were family. Ciara even does home baking for her guests, we were in heaven! A final thank you to Ciara and Kelsey for having us stay at their home, even though it was at short notice! Ciaran, you owe your cousin a large drink of her choice.”

Not bad eh? The best breakfast fry we had on the whole trip? Especially after those fabulous [swanky] five star hotels and resorts. Talking of which, I’d better get a wiggle on and prepare for this morning’s feast! Have a super Sunday. x
